I am very grateful to the Mark Master Masons for giving me the opportunity to become a Palliative Care Nurse. I have been encouraged by the senior Mark Master Masons continual interest in my progress as well as through their financial support. I qualified as a nurse many years ago and had taken a break in service to bring up my children and accompany my husband abroad. When I returned to the UK I fully intended to go back into nursing but found that the employment market was very difficult so I started to volunteer at my local Hospice and embarked on a short self-funded course at the University of Hertfordshire to learn more about palliative care. As I was beginning my studies I was extremely fortunate to obtain a scholarship through the Mark Master Masons and this continual support over the last 3 years has given me the chance to study for a degree in Palliative Care which I hope to complete successfully this year. The degree course has given me the opportunity to learn so much more about end of life care and led directly to my obtaining a permanent post as a Staff Nurse at my local Day Hospice, Grove House in St Albans, which I started last November. I feel very privileged to do the work I do in helping to look after people as they reach the end of their lives and am convinced that without the Mark Master Masons support this would not have been possible. I am determined to graduate this year and look forward to sharing my success with the Mark Master Masons at the Graduation ceremony in St Albans Abbey in November.

Natalie Sawyer [left] is studying for a BEd in Primary Education and says:

I am currently completing the final year of a BEd Primary Education degree. I am focussing on lower primary; children aged 3 – 7 in the Early Years Foundation Stage and Key Stage One, and also specialising in History. The scholarship I have received annually from the Mark Master Masons of Hertfordshire has been much appreciated and extremely useful whilst completing my degree. As I do not have exams to pass, I have six assignments per year based on the different subjects of the National Curriculum and Professional Studies. In order to pass these I have to do a considerable amount of reading and I purchased these books using the scholarship money. Without them I would not have been able to complete the assignments and would therefore have failed the course. These books are also a great help to me whilst on placement and teaching a class, giving me ideas and resources to use in lessons.
The course is full time and I am expected to be either in lectures or in schools every day from 9.00am until 5.00pm. The scholarship money has enabled me to continue my studies without having to work, which I would have had to have done as there are a lot of travel expenses!
I have recently completed my skills tests and I am about to start an eight week placement in a Year 1 Class. Currently I am looking for a job and after gaining my Qualified Teacher Status in May I hope to be teaching my first full time class in September. I would like to thank the Mark Master Masons of Hertfordshire again for the scholarship over the three years of my degree, it has been a great help. Thank you.
