First traces of this order are found in 1778 with Thomas Dunckerley in the Royal Arch Chapter of Friendship at Portsmouth "... making Templars".

In 1779 the Templar Degree was worked under York Grand Lodge, and by 1780 there was a Supreme Grand Royal Encampment at Bristol and subsequently in 1791 a Grand Conclave with Dunckerley presiding as Grand Master.
